Sharing in the tragedy: reporting the news, when you are the news #WDBJ

I cannot pretend to understand, or even begin to understand, what the friends and colleagues of the two journalists murdered on air are going through. But this video really struck a chord with me:

We over-use the word ‘brave’ these days, but I think there genuinely is something brave about continuing to do your job reporting the news, when you and your friends and colleagues are part of that news. To share the tragedy that you are going through, to give so much of yourself to your audience, is a very difficult, very brave thing to do.

So, hats off to the team at WBDJ and their competitors. You’ve done yourselves, and the whole profession of journalism, very, very proud.
